Miller bowls 700 series

It didn’t happen until the ninth week of the 2009-10 season, but a local bowler finally rolled a 700 series at the Galaxy Center.

Barry Miller was the first man to break through the barrier, with a 713 series in the Galaxy Classic League last Monday.

Mark Rogers (678) and David Norman (664) also topped the previous high series score for the season.

The highest game of the week was bowled by Beverly Shearer, with a 251 score in the Wednesday Wonders League. This is the second-highest women’s game at Galaxy this season.



League Highlights

Galaxy Classic

The bowlers in this league recorded the best group of series scores of the season last week.

As noted at the top of the column, Barry Miller bowled the first 700 series of the season at Galaxy with a 713 total with games of 242, 225 and 246.

Mark Rogers had the second-highest series of the season, at 678, while Tyler Morgan (651), Spider Weaver (645), Ron Roberts (601) and Lynn Estes (600) also reached the coveted 600 series level.

A total of 22 games of 200 or better were recorded by 12 bowlers. These scores are included in the top scores of the week at the end of the column.

Renda Roberts had the best women’s game at 184.



Galaxy Girls

Narita Rose topped her average by nearly 100 pins with a 237 game to lead this league. Her 514 series was also the best of the night. Connie Murphy was second in each category at 186 and 495.

Emma Lee Tate converted the 5-6-7-10 split, while Lemetta Dause picked up the 5-10.



Wednesday Wonders

Beverly Shearer rolled a no-miss 251 game to lead this league and move into second place on the leader board for women’s games at Galaxy this season. Shearer finished with a 556 series to lead all women for the week at Galaxy.

Sheila Patrick had the second-best women’s game with a season-best 196 score.

Mark Rogers (204) and David Norman (196) had the top men’s games, while Terry Moses bowled the best series, at 557.

Jennifer Morris had a season-best 146 game.

David Norman established new season-highs for this league by bowling a 248 game and 664 series during a session which had been postponed from the previous week.



Classic Doubles

Wesley Canter had the top series (589), which included a 200 game. Substitute Mark Rogers rolled the only other 200 game with a 204 score.

Barbara Brogle bowled the highest women’s game (189) and second-highest series (505), while Beverly Shearer had the high series (509) and second-highest game (182).

Splits picked up included the 3-4-6-7 by Tina Hisle, the 2-8-9 by Steve McKnight and the 5-7 by Dean Acker.



Friday Night Mixed

Ronald Richmond (203) and Lewis Jones Sr. (191) bowled the best games in this league, while Jones Sr. (521) and Robert Richmond (517) had the best series scores.

Novel Davis (180) and Tina Harrison (177) had the top women’s games, while the top women’s series was 485 by Miranda Rowe.



TGIF

Harold Stoll had the top game (210) and second-highest series (517) in this league, while Merle Meade bowled the highest series (520) and second-highest game (202).

The top women’s games were 170 by Helen McKnight and 166 by Margaret Tilsley.

Carl Mischke picked up the 5-10 split.



Arlington

Becky Fraser (188) and Jane Gordon (177) had the highest games, while Doris Gish (483) and Fraser (477) had the best series scores.

Season-best games were bowled by Pam Northern (165), Jeanne Stull (161), Sybil Fagan (161), Peggy Coyle (151) and Berry Morris (133).



Early Birds

The top game (205) and series (546) for the day were bowled by Beverly Shearer.

Beverly Brassfield had the second-highest game, 185, while Pat Harris had the second-best series, at 507.

Harris (173) and Geraldine Goss (179) had season-best games.



Bad Bowlers

The top games in this league were 205 by Jim Hisle and 185 by David Robinson. Robinson (363) and Hisle (361) also had the best two-games series for the night.

Tina Hisle (178) and Kim Walls (153) had the best women’s games.

Misty Hisle picked up the 3-10 split.



Fun tournament results

Twenty-nine bowlers participated in the first fun tournament of the season at the Galaxy Center last weekend. This tournament combined the 3-6-9 format in which bowlers are awarded free strikes in the third, sixth, and ninth frames and the no-tap format in which a bowler is awarded a strike for knocking down nine pins with the first ball in the frame.

When the scores were tallied, David Norman emerged with the top score among the men, with a six-game total of 1,584. Mark Rogers was second at 1,561 and Lewis Jones Jr. third at 1,524.

Beverly Shearer led the women with a 1,422 score, while Judy Poynter was second at 1,311 and Genny Bryant third at 1,236.

The top three men and women each earned prize money of $46, $27 and $18.

Three “perfect” games were bowled with the aid of the enhanced scoring of the 3-6-9 and no-tap formats. Lewis Jones Jr. recorded one 300 game and David Norman bowled two consecutive 300 games on the way to winning the first-place money.

The next Madison County Bowling Association fun tournament will be the annual turkey shoot on Nov. 22.
