Colonels aren’t out of it yet

Nathan Hutchinson

RICHMOND After last week’s disappointing loss at Austin Peay, the Colonels are not exactly in a great position to make a run at a third-straight Ohio Valley Conference championship.

However, there are still four weeks left in the season.

And the Colonels aren’t out of this thing yet — not by a long shot.

Eastern Illinois (4-1 OVC) and Tennessee State (2-1) sit on top of the standings heading into this weekend’s games, while three teams are still in the hunt with a pair of league losses each — EKU (4-2), Tennessee Tech (3-2) and Austin Peay (2-2).

At this point, there are an almost limitless number of scenarios that could play out and any of the top five teams could claim the title and the conference’s automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs.

And honestly, I’m just not smart enough to figure them all out right now.

This much, however, is obvious — the Colonels must win their final two OVC games, starting with Saturday’s game against SEMO at Roy Kidd Stadium, and Tennessee State and Eastern Illinois must each lose at least one more OVC game.

I have no doubt that TSU will stumble down the stretch. It’s a yearly tradition in Nashville for the Tigers to fade late in the season.

The Panthers, on the other hand, have a fairly easy road to the title. EIU is at Murray State this weekend and then finishes the season with home games against UT Martin (Nov. 14) and Tennessee State (Nov. 19).

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens, but I have a good feeling that EKU’s regular-season finale at Jacksonville State (Nov. 21) will have a big impact on the title.

Classy coach?

I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw a piece written by a Lexington Herald-Leader sports columnist last week.

Actually, it was the headline that really made me chuckle.

“Count on Brooks to always be a class act.”

Now, I’m not saying Rich Brooks is not a classy guy.

Not at all.

Still, its always been my opinion that classy people don’t go out of their way to constantly remind you of their accomplishments.

And Brooks never seems to shy away from telling any within shouting distance how much better the football program at UK is now than it was before he took he over.

Just for the record, in seven seasons at Kentucky, Brooks has a 36-44 record. His overall record as a head coach is 127-153-4 in 25 seasons.

Future voice of the Colonels

I know the job is not currently available (and it probably won’t be any time soon), but in the future I think Sean Hamilton would be a great choice to be the full-time radio voice of EKU sports.

And trust me, I know many people in this community who share the same opinion on the subject.

Sean is a character, that’s for sure.

And he would certainly bring a different style to the broadcast of EKU games.

But, I think that would be a good thing.

A very good thing.

Sad, but true

I heard a popular national radio talk show host say this recently.

“There are a lot of really smart dumb people in this country.”

I couldn’t agree more

It’s sad, but so very true.
