Wiggins claims club title at MCC

RICHMOND —
Twenty-four golfers teed it up at the Madison Country Club last weekend in the men’s club championship. Lifting the victory flag, after thirty-six holes of play, was Selby Wiggins with a one-under par 143. Second place went to Tom Pendergrass with a 146, Randy Jewell was third with a 149. Low net champion was Tom Pendergrass, with a 142.
First flight winner was Travis Broaddus with a 164. Jera Deurson was low net winner with a 142. Second flight was won by Lee Smith with a 170 and Carl Noe was net Winner with a 143.
The scores were a little higher than usual this year because the course is playing tough. This dry spell has made the ground so hard that if you hit one off line a little bit and miss the fairway, you are out of bounds or in deep trouble. Ouch!
Men’s league chairman, Hubert Broaddus, with big help from Poochie McPeak, has done a yeoman’s job with the men’s league this year. You da team! Mahalo!
Jewell finds a jewel
While playing in the tournament at the Madison Country Club Sunday, Randy Jewell noticed a sparkle in the rough. He picked it up and it turned out to be a “diamond in the rough.” It was a three-carat diamond that had fallen out of an heirloom ring worn by Vicky Anderson of Danville. Vicky’s husband, Marty, (who won fourth place in the championship flight during Labor Day), inherited the ring from his grandmother.
Randy Jewell called Vicky at her home in Danville and when he informed her of his find, she broke into tears. Wow! What a miracle. A needle in a haystack would be easier to find than a diamond on a golf course. Eagle eye Randy surely brightened up the Anderson home. You da man, Randy!
Gibson Bay ladies end season with scramble
On Sept. 24, the Ladies League at Gibson Bay held a season-ending scramble. Six threesomes teed it up in the nine-hole tournament.
Emerging as champions was the team of Missy Smith, Sandy Clark and Patty Miller with a 34. Three teams tied for second place with scores of 36. The teams were Nancy Pennington, Dewey Locker and Ronda Vavrosky; Pat Litzinger, Yolanda Fritz and Jo Helen Cobb; Stacie Eberle, Debbie Moberly, and Linda Drummond.
Shots of note were a chip-in on No. 1 by Dewey Locker and another chip-in by Stacie Eberle on No. 3. Missy Smith won both closest to the pin honors on Nos. 3 and 6. Wow! Missy was in the zone.
Congratulations to you and your team.
Madison Country Club Friday nighters scramble
A season-ending tournament of the Friday Night League ended with a nine-hole scramble. Four teams teed it up in the event and the winners were: first, Carolyn Jones, Katty Wylie, Carl Noe, Dave Thompson and Steve Allen with a 31; second, Al Tribble, Linda Thompson, Bruce and Lynn Lainhart; third were Lorna Tribble, Pat Brandenburg, Kenny and Sondra Wilson and Gary Blevins with a 34.
Afterward, everyone enjoyed pizza from Gillums, tossed salad and a lot of homemade pies and a coconut cake. Fantastic! Thanks to chairmen Al and Lorna Tribble and Gary and Aleta Blevins for working so hard this summer and for such a wonderful party at the end. Thanks to Lynn Lainhart for the great pies. Afterward, everyone was invited downstairs to enjoy karaoke. Wonderful, wonderful.
Footnote to the Invitational held at BGAD Sept. 20-21 by Jason Brandenburg – Sunday morning, before the first tee time, we had to run a herd of cattle off old No. 1 green. The green was indented pretty bad so we called the pro shop and asked for some help. We would like to thank all the “early” morning golfers who came up to the green and helped repair the cattle hoof holes with divot tools.
Thanks, Jason, for this update and I am sorry for leaving Andy Dunn’s name off the list of thank yous after the tournament. Andy Dunn is one of the staff members who had the course in great shape. Sorry, Andy, you da man!
Upcoming events
Friday – Jim Ishmael Memorial Night Scramble starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Bluegrass Army Depot.
Oct. 11 – Bluegrass Army Depot will host a Rally For The Cure Golf Scramble. There will be an 11 a.m. shotgun start. This tournament is to benefit the Breast Cancer Foundation. For more info, call 779-7222.
Final thought
If the brain were so simple we could understand it, we would be so simple we couldn’t.
Live, love, laugh and learn, Glenmore.
