Berea blasts Nicholas County
Register Staff Report
Berea Community’s football team got a little payback on Nicholas County Friday in Carlisle with a 42-15 victory.
Two years ago, when the Bluejackets came to Berea, they trounced the Pirates, 52-0. Coach Kenan McWhorter said he’s not only proud of how far his 4-0 Pirates have come in two years, but the way they’ve done it.
“When I got here last year, the kids had bad attitudes towards everything, just from losing so much,” McWhorter said. “We’ve come a long way, trying to be a classy program and do things the right way. I think we’re exhibiting class but it’s tough because Berea’s been down for so long.”
Putting points on the board for Berea were: senior running back Rashad Slaughter, senior running back Logan Hester, junior wide receiver Joseph Parker, senior wide receiver Steve Sandefur and junior quarterback Bo Brewer. Brewer had two rushing touchdowns in addition to passing touchdowns he had to Parker and Sandefur.
“We’re playing as a team and as a family,” McWhorter said. “It really helps that way. We don’t have any egos. I call timeout and they’re telling me the plays that will work and they aren’t even getting the ball. When you see that as a coach, it’s a good thing. If we can get that balanced, it’s hard for teams to focus on one person. When other people start contributing, they have a hard time stopping us.”
McWhorter described the beginning of the game as a “stalemate.” The Pirates forced Nicholas County to punt the ball on its first three possessions and was able to score on their third possession on their way to a 21-0 lead.
“It was a hard-fought game,” he said. “It was their homecoming and they were really pumped up for the game. We came out early and jumped on them and our defense was able to stop them early.”
Slaughter had more than 100 yards rushing for the Pirates.
