Mills honored during EKU golf scramble

Glenmore Jones

RICHMOND Last Saturday at Arlington, Brad Mills was the inaugural recipient of the Carter Brandenburg Award. The award was initiated by Pat and Joni Stephens and was announced by Pat prior to the start of the EKU Golf Booster Scramble.

Carter Brandenburg’s widow, Pat, presented the plaque to Brad Mills. The inscription on the plaque read: “Awarded to a team member (men’s or women’s EKU team), alumni or friend of the men’s and women’s golf programs who demonstrates the qualities that Carter Brandenburg lived his life by: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect of the game of golf, positive contribution to the EKU men’s and women’s golf programs.”

It was a tearful presentation and went to Brad Mills, who was a friend and co-worker of Carter’s at Arlington and was certainly worthy of the award. I am sure Carter would have approved.

It was a wonderful tribute to a man that was loved and respected by everyone that knew him.

Mahalo to Pat and Joni Stephens for initiating this wonderful award.

Model girls start season with win

Last Thursday at Arlington, the Model Laboratory High School girl’s golf team defeated Estill County in their first golf tournament of the season. It was a nine-hole match and Model won, with a total of 226 to Estill County’s 234.

Rebecca McPherson led Model with a 50, Stefanie Giacchini had 55, Deanna Johnson, 58, Shelby Schneid, 63 and Beth Insko, 64.

The girls teed it up Saturday with nine teams in the East Jessamine Invitational at High Point Golf Club in Nicholasville. Model finished in sixth place ahead of Henry Clay, Madison Southern and Tates Creek. Giacchini led the team with a 93, McPherson had a 103, Johnson had a 105, Emily Lowe had a 106 and Insko a 111; for a team total of 407.

This was the girl’s first 18-hole tournament and team captain Johnson asked the girls to gut it out in the grueling high temperatures. A couple of teams had girls drop out because of the heat.

Dolly Parton said, “I never tried quitting and I never quit trying.”

Model starts this season with some fine play for some young talent in McPherson and Giacchini. This is a young team without seniors and they are going to be very competitive in the future.

We will all be watching so keep it going, girls.

Upcoming events

Sept. 7 — Arlington will host the senior rivalry between the Battlefield seniors and the Arlington seniors.

Sept. 20 and 21 — Bluegrass Army Depot will host its Men’s Invitational Tournament. Entry fee is $125 for the 36-hole tournament (cart included). It will be flighted by handicap. There will be a steak dinner and dance for two, refreshments on the course, one free practice round (cart not included). There is a shootout Friday, Sept. 19 at 5:30. For info, call 859-779-6622 or 779-7222.

Final thought

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant — Robert Louis Stevenson.

Until next time … live, love, laugh and learn, Glenmore
