The Berea Community volleyball team won its first game of the season, but still fell at home Tuesday.
Monticello jumped out to a one-game lead over the Lady Pirates, then held on for a 2-1 (25-17, 21-25, 15-9) victory. Berea (0-2) opened the season Monday with a 0-2 loss to Lincoln County on the road.
Berea’s Ashley Woods gave her team an advantage in the second as the starting server, opening with a 6-3 run. Berea extended its lead and went on to force a third game.
“I’m sure it was encouraging to the girls (to win a game),” Berea coach Charlotte Isaacs said. “They played the way they should have played.”
Berea had a 7-5 advantage early in the third game, but Monticello worked its way back into the game and took the lead back, 10-9, then pulled away.
“We need to back to some basics,” Isaacs said. “We’re going to work on our team-building skills as well.”
Berea returns to action next Tuesday at Bath County.
