Red Sox, Astros win Major League tournament titles

RICHMOND —
The Richmond Little League Major League tournament champions were crowned on Thursday night at Lake Reba.
The Micron Red Sox clinched the American Division title with a 6-2 win over the Cummins Dental Rangers, while the Taylor’s Sporting Goods Astros claimed the National League title over the McDonald’s Cardinals with a 10-9, come-from-behind victory.
American Division
The Micron Red Sox pulled out a definitive, 6-2 win over the Cummins Dental Rangers to take the Major League American Division title Thursday at Lake Reba.
Brothers Kyle and Jonah Kelsey each hit a home run and Will Daniel had a RBI triple, as the Red Sox took an early 4-0 lead and never looked back.
Daniel, Jonah Kelsey and Austin Alexander all pitched for Micron.
For the Rangers, Jonathan Ross and Zack Lewis each had doubles and Ross Cummins hit a RBI single. Hunter Kabalen pitched the entire game.
Prior to the game, members of the 1961 Pioneers, the first sanctioned Little League team in Richmond, threw out the commemorative first pitches. Present from the original team were: Billy Wells, Doug Cornette, Mark Moberly and Doug West.
Named to the American Division 11- and 12-year-old all star team were: Joseph Hampton and Austin Templeton (Central Kentucky Surgery); Ross Cummins (Cummins Dental); Austin Alexander, Drew Harmon and Jonah Kelsey (Mikron); Mason Crump and Ashton Scott (People’s Bank) and Dexter Hicks, Michael Kendrick, Jeremy Lakes and Isaac Swafford from University Book and Supply.
Named to the 11-year-old American Division all star team were: Jyre Richardson, Carter Skipworth and Josh Wright (Central Kentucky Surgery); Drake Coomer and Hunter Kabalen (Cummins Dental); Will Daniel, Kyle Kelsey and Tanner Thornsberry (Mikron); Kameron Presnell and Seth Richardson (People’s Bank) and Jordan Adams and Dylan Masters from University Book and Supply.
National Division
Benjamin Morin hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Taylor’s Sporting Goods Astros to a 10-9 win in the Major League National Division title game over the McDonald’s Cardinals Thursday at Lake Reba.
The Cardinals’ Nick Kavanaugh hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to give his team a 9-7 lead. Alex Georgel also scored on Kavanaugh’s blast over the center-field wall. However, Morin hit a RBI triple and later went on to score to tie the game.
Georgel came on in relief in the fifth inning and struck out three of the four batters to preserve the lead, but couldn’t hold on in the final inning.
Named to the National Division 11-year-old all star team were: Tanner Kidwell and Seth Marks (McDonald’s); Hunter Fritz (Richmond Kiwanis); Dakota Begley, Justin Ferris, Brennan Fields and Donte’ Minter (Riley Oil); Sam Eye from Taylor’s Sporting Goods and Will Blankenship, Case Covington, Griffin Sexton and Trey Sexton from the VFW team.
Named to the National Division 11- and 12-year-old all star team were: Alex Georgel, Nick Kavanaugh and Cameron Young (McDonald’s); Daylan Culton, Brayden Holker and Lane Owen (Richmond Kiwanis); Zach Voll (Riley Oil); Joseph Holbrook, Benjamin Morin and Easten Shouse (Taylor’s Sporting Goods) and Griffin Hotchkiss and Derek Mills from VFW.
