Another year, another title for the Lady Patriots.
Model took first place in 11 events on the way to a dominant performance Tuesday at the Class A Region 5 Track and Field Meet in Williamsburg. The Lady Patriots racked up 184 points, almost double the total of Somerset (102.5), which finished second, on the way to a sixth straight regional championship.
Standout senior Kaylyn Pratt once again led the way for Model, winning three individual titles — 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the high jump — and also finished second in the long jump.
Chelsea Harnack took first in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles and was second in the 200-meter dash. She was also a member of the school’s 4x200 meter relay team (Alex Kubala, Hannah Nnoromele, Nmeli Nnoromele and Harnack), which finished first as well.
Model finished in the top two in all four relay events, with the 4x800 team (Mary Ellen Wimberly, Rebecca Shelton, Megan Brandenburg and H. Nnoromele) taking first in a school-record time and the 4x100 meter team (Kubala, Amy Dong, Julie Wedel and N. Nnoromele) and the 4x400 team (Kubala, Brandenburg, Wimberly and Shelton) both finishing second.
Wimberly won the 1,600-meter run and was second in the 800-meter run. Shelton took first in the 800-meter run and H. Nnoromele finished first in the 400-meter dash.
Wedel also finished first in the triple jump and was third in the pole vault.
In the boys competition, Matt Schumann was the only Patriot to qualify for the state tournament. He took first place in the shot put and pole vault and was second in the discus.
Model’s 4x200 relay team of Andrew Sehmann, Jim Price, Chris Caldwell and Schumann finished fourth.
The Patriots finished in sixth place with 32 points.
In the Class AAA Region 5 Meet Tuesday at Henry Clay, Madison Central finished seventh in both the girls and boys competition.
Senior Ricky Rhodes led Central with a first-place finish in the long jump and a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash. Kaleb Ellis won the pole vault and Bill Marcum was third in the 1,600 meters.
Whitney Holker finished second in the high jump and Melissa Gwanyanya was third in the discus. The Lady Indians’ 4x200 relay team finished third.
In the Class AA Region 4 Meet Tuesday at Boyle County, Madison Southern’s girls finished sixth with 27.5 points and the boys team had 17 points and finished seventh.
Liz Hogwood was third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. Kayla Christensen was third in the high jump and Melissa Christensen was third in the triple jump.
The KHSAA State Track Meet is scheduled for May 30 and 31 in Louisville.
