Green, Schneid help Model beat Lady Pirates again

RICHMOND —
The Lady Patriots dominated the regular-season series with Berea, winning all three games between the two schools by double-digit margins.
But things weren’t so easy for Model on Tuesday in the opening round of the 44th District Tournament at Gertrude Hood Field on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University.
The Lady Patriots got off to a slow start offensively, but Maggie Green struck out 15 batters in a 6-3 victory. Model, the defending district champ, moves on to the title game and will face Madison Central at 5:30 p.m. today.
“We let them hang around,” Model coach Kelli Bromley said. “We didn’t achieve any of the goals we had set for ourselves tonight. Tomorrow we have to come out focused and play harder than we did tonight.”
Berea’s Shelby Renzenbrink gave up six runs in seven innings while striking out four in the loss.
The Lady Patriots pushed across two runs in the top of the third inning after center fielder Emily Love walked, first baseman Kelli Jo Stapp singled to left and Madison Schneid reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Lady Patriots struck again in the top of the fourth, but Renzenbrink then quieted the Lady Patriots for just one inning before they tallied three more times in the top of the sixth. The rally was capped by a home run from shortstop Shelby Schneid, who went 3-for-4 with two singles.
Berea was able to push across a run in the fourth, taking advantage of a triple by center fielder Kayla Hurst. The Lady Pirates held aspirations of a late-inning comeback after shortstop Brittany Hogg walked and left fielder Sarah Haycraft hit a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
Green was able to settle down and stop all hopes of the comeback after retiring the next two batters she faced.
