Kiper, Layman win in playoff at MCC

Glenmore Jones
Register Golf Columnist

RICHMOND Last weekend at the Madison Country Club, 28 two-somes teed it up in the annual member guest tournament. It was a 36-hole tourney with nine holes best ball, nine holes alternate shot and an 18 hole-scramble on Sunday.

Two teams tied with 36-hole scores of 124. Emerging victorious after a playoff was the team of Jeremy Kiper and Ron Layman. Losing in the playoff and taking second place was Hubert Broaddus and Arno Norwell. Third went to Randy Jewell and Tyson Phillips with a score of 125.

The second flight was won by Chad Davis and Reagan Taylor with 127. Second went to Johnny Baird and Jeremy Cox with 130 and third went to Luke Wright and Steve Farmer, 131. The third flight winners were Tom Pendergrass and Skip East, 136, second place went to Travis Broaddus and Brook Stinnett, 137, and third place went to Don and grandson Trace Edwards, also with 137 but losing on scorecard match.

Closest to the pin honors went to Jeremy Cox on No. 3, Marty Snowden on No. 6 and Skip East on No. 9.

In the shoot-out on Friday afternoon, long shots Mike Russell and Winfred Hughes took most of the loot by out-playing the second-place duo of Tom Pendergrass and Skip East and third-place finishers Randy Jewell and Tyson Phillips.

This is always an exciting event followed by a vocal, motorized gallery. What made this win by Mike and Winfred especially sweet was the fact that they were able to be in the shoot-out because another team dropped out!

Great golf guys!!

On Saturday night, Verna and Michael Freer put on a tasty pork tenderloin dinner with all the trimmings. Co-chairs Hubert Broaddus and George Powell, with a lot of help from Poochie McPeak, did a great job of putting on another exciting tournament at the old Madison Country Club.

Salute!

Battlefield hosts the Knights of Columbus

Last Saturday, 76 players took to the links at the Battlefield in the Knights of Columbus Scramble. After the last shot was fired and the smoke cleared the team raising the victory flag was David Bonn, Keith Brock, Ryan Neal and Carl Hunt with a 49.

Wow!

Second place with a 51 was the team of Shelby and Brad Tevis, Raymond Ross and Jeff Gillium. Third with a 53 was Ralph Hacker, Bill and Gary Abney and Danny Reilly.

In the special events, the closest to the pin honors went to Ed Miracle on No. 17 and Larry Peters on No. 6. The long drive competition was won by Jamie Keene on No. 9 and Paul Esker on No. 16.

Bob Geiger as usual orchestrated another successful event on the links with help from pro Clay Hamrick and his staff.

Well done, Mate!

Footnote: When I went out to Battlefield to pick up these results Clay had his handsome little three-year old son, Mason, on the putting green priming him for EKU’s golf team in 2024. I watched him hit a few balls on the range and he whacks it pretty good.

You da man, Mason!

Congratulations to the Colonels

Hats off to coach Pat Stephens and his EKU golf team for their 12th-place finish in the NCAA Regionals last weekend in Columbus, Ohio. EKU was seeded 22nd out of the 25 teams, but finished 10 spots higher.

After getting to fifth place after 36 holes, I am sure it is disappointing not to have been among the top 10 teams qualifying for the final NCAA field, but you still had a great tournament and a great year.

I am sure that everyone in Richmond is proud of you and your accomplishments on the links this year.

You are tops!

Final thought
