Summer leagues begin at Galaxy

Dean Acker

RICHMOND The Tuesday Night Mixed League started its summer season May 6. The highest games recorded during the first week were 233 by Matt Poe, 201 by Carl Daniels and 200 by Beverly Shearer. Shearer and Jim Anderson had the high series score at 547 each.

The Two Dorks (Anthony Newland and Travis Caudill) have taken the early lead in the Thursday Classic Doubles League.

Novel Davis at 244 and Jerry R. Rose at 235 have the two high games, while Beverly Shearer, Carl Daniels, David Robinson, Travis Caudill, Lewis Jones, Jr., Denny McPherson, Willy Sparks and Anthony Newland have also rolled scores of better than 200 during the first two weeks of this league.

The Bad Bowlers Fun League will start its summer season at 7 p.m. May 27. This is an opportunity for less-experienced bowlers to enjoy friendly competition while improving their bowling skills.

Wednesday tournaments

The Galaxy Bowling Center is holding weekly tournaments at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays this summer.

Different style tournaments will be held each week and varying oil patterns will be used on the lanes. Handicaps will be based upon 80 percent of the difference between the bowler’s average and 210.

The first tournament was held last Wednesday and Tyler Morgan emerged as the first king of the hill by winning the no-tap tourney with a score of 729. Other bowlers who won prize money were Joshua Smith who was second with a score of 714, Jim Anderson who was third at 650 and David Norman who was fourth at 644.

This week’s tournament will be in the 3-6-9 format in which bowlers receive free strikes in the third, sixth, and ninth frames of each game.

Friday Nite Mixed League summary

The 7/10 team (Harold Graves, Sue Johnson, Ladonna Graves and Donnie Barger) took the title in the 32-week 2007-08 Friday Nite Mixed League.

Strike Force (Wanda Jones, Tina Harrison, Denny McPherson and William Sparks) finished second and the Misfits (Misti Harrison, Mike Masters, J J Harrison and Novel Davis) took third place.

Lewis Jones, Jr., had the top average for men, Ronald Richmond had the high game, and Neil Haggard had the high series.

Judy Stewart had the highest average and high game for women, while Debbie Fain had the top series score.

The top men and women in each category are listed at the end of this column.

On a sad note

In an earlier column, it was noted that William Hargrove of Clermont, Ga., was the oldest league bowler in history at age 106. The USBC reports that Mr. Hargrove died May 5, four days short of his 107th birthday. He was scheduled to start bowling in a summer league on May 19.
