Patriots run away with title

RICHMOND — Led by strong relay results and the solid efforts of Chelsea Harnack and Kaylyn Pratt, the Model Laboratory girl’s track team rolled to an easy win Tuesday in the Bluegrass Conference Championships at Glenn Marshall Elementary.

The Lady Patriots racked up 239 points, easily outdistancing Nicholas County (99 points) for the title. Berea Community finished fourth with 36 points.

In the boy’s competition, Nicholas County edged out Sayre for first place. Model finished fourth (68 points) and Berea was sixth.

Athletes from Madison Central, Madison Southern, Estill County and other schools which are not members of the Bluegrass Conference competed in the event, but those results did not count toward the final team totals.

The Lady Patriots took first place in all four relay events (4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800) and also got three individual victories from Pratt and Harnack. Pratt finished first in the 100-meter dash, high jump and long jump. Harnack took the title in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash.

Julie Wedel won two individual titles — triple jump and pole vault — and was third in the 100-meter hurdles. Model’s Emily Grimes took first in the javelin and was second in the shot put, Katelyn Robbins won the shot put and was second in the discus and Hannah Nnoromele won the 400-meter dash.

Other top finishers for the Lady Patriots included: Mary Ellen Wimberly (second — 1,600-meter), Nmeli Nnoromele (second — 300-meter hurdles), Leila Cahill (second — 800-meters) and Sara Loy (second — triple jump).

Berea’s Sydney Sanderfur won the 800-meter run and Samantha Woodard took second in the pole vault and third in the 100-meter hurdles.

In the boys competition, Matthew Schumann finished first in the pole vault, discus and javelin and was second in the shot put. Brent Billings was second in the 200-meter dash and the long jump and Chris Caldwell was second in the 800-meters.

The Patriots took second in the 4x200 relay.
