Riverkeepers scramble a success despite rain
Glenmore Jones

RICHMOND —
Last Thursday, 14 four-person teams splashed around the Arlington Golf Course in the fifth annual Kentucky Riverkeeper Scramble.
On a day that was more in keeping for ducks than golfers, several water-logged teams headed for the dry dock and didn’t finish. I think it showed true grit and fortitude to the teams that had the stamina to stay the course.
Playing some great golf in spite of the weather, the winning team was John Berry, Dale Stubblefield, Terry Rogers and Erick Thomas with a 16-under par 56. Dale Stubblefield really helped his team immensely with a hole-in-one on No. 7. Dale also received a kayak donated by Sportsman’s Warehouse at Hamburg Place in Lexington for that great shot.
Wow! You da man, Dale!
Second place went to the River Scramblers — Rick Winn, Dan Higgins, Mike Blakeney and Alan Banks with a 59. Third place went to the Jackson Four — Scott Jackson, Mike Park, John Hamilton and Tim Stephens with a 60.
In the special events, the winners were: Tim Stephens — Long drive on No. 9; Pat Brandenburg —Long drive for women on No. 1; and closest to pin on #14 — Tim Stephens.
After play the players adjourned to the Mule Barn for a tasty luncheon buffet and the winning teams received their awards. There were also numerous door prizes and a Kentucky Riverkeepers shirt for all participants. Another kayak from Sportsman’s Warehouse was won by Scott Jackson in a lottery held during dinner.
Proceeds from this event will help support the Kentucky Riverkeeper Corporation which is part of the Waterkeeper Alliance, a coalition of more than 150 “Keepers” around the world. It is one of the fastest growing environmental groups over the last decade and is led by its president Robert Kennedy, Jr.
Their main purpose is to stop pollution of our waterways and help return them to their natural state.
Special thanks to chairman Alan Banks for promoting a great cause and also for seeing that I got all the results.
Salute!
Florida connection helps local junior golfers
Thanks to local resident Charles Hacker and all the good folks at Baypointe Golf Course in Seminole, Fla., the junior golf clinics at Gibson Bay and the Madison Country Club have had plenty of golf balls to practice with.
Every spring for several years Charles has been bringing home five or six hundred golf balls that he and his friends at Baypointe have collected over the winter. They have been generously donated to both of these junior programs and have helped tremendously on cutting expenses.
This year Charles had several golf clubs that were also donated for the juniors.
I want to express my gratitude to Charles and all of his friends at Baypointe for their kindness and generosity. Head pro Jason Eberle at Gibson Bay also wanted to convey his thanks to all of you.
Aloha and mahalo!
