Floyd shines once again at national championship

RICHMOND Morgan Floyd did not defend her title, but she still turned in a very solid performance Saturday at the National Archery in the Schools Program National Championship in Louisville.

The Madison Central junior finished with a final score of 277 and took 20th place among all high school girls in the event. She posted the best finish of any local athlete in the competition, beating out Madison Southern’s Brooklin Sarver by just one point.

The tournament was held at the Kentucky Expo Center and more than 3,000 shooters from across the nation competed, making it the largest archery competition ever in the United States.

The official results were released on Monday afternoon.

Students-athletes from Madison Central, Madison Southern and Glenn Marshall Elementary all qualified for the record-breaking event.

In addition to the outstanding scores posted by Floyd and Sarver, several other local shooters did very well in the girls high school division. Carissa Felts (Central) finished with a total score of 271, Lindsey Carr (Southern) shot a 267, Daedra Collwell (Southern) finished with a 265, Brandi Burchfield (Southern) shot a 262 and Hannah Sharp (Central) had a score of 261.

Other local athletes who competed in the girls high school division included: Brooke Meacham (Southern — 255), Courtney Elam (Southern — 249), Virginia Harrison (Central — 244), Haley Carmen (Southern — 244), Alicia Maynard (Central — 242), Britney Combs (Central — 236), Whitney Osborne (Southern — 230), Nikki Abney (Southern — 230), Kendra Patton (Central — 229), Sheena Roden (Central — 255), Jaimee Smith (Southern — 215) and Brittany Brookshire (Central — 177).

Zach Brewer of Madison Southern had the best finish of any local shooter in the boys high school division. The junior tied for 41st with a score of 280.

Southern’s Matt Dolen posted a total of 277, while teammates Andrew Rogers (269), Coty Neal (266) and Ralph Isaacs (264) also turned in solid performances.

Other local athletes who competed in the boys high school division included: Kenneth Hall (Central — 262), John Peterson (Southern — 262), John Cain (Southern — 261), James Bonta (Southern — 261), Zach Short (Southern — 260), John Kunce (Central — 259), Coty Hatton (Southern — 254), Dillon Strickland (Central — 233), Michael Dorman (Central — 214), Daniel Dalton (Central — 214), Shawn Strickland (Central — 212), Charles Clark (Central — 199), Jacob Barnes (Central — 198), Jacob Overbay (Central — 195) and Dallas Merrill (Central — 179).

In the elementary girls division, Glenn Marshall’s Hannah Miller had the top score among local competitors, posting a 249. Teammate Amelia Barnes shot a 238, while several other Glenn Marshall shooters performed well, including: Angelica Reisig (215), Emalie Jones (200), Lindsey Lyons (198), Courtney Patton (194), Kennedi Pugh (167) and Hailey Sharp (161).

Madison Southern’s Savanah Sarver shot a 183.

In the boys elementary division, Glenn Marshall’s Andrew Masters had the top score. The fifth-grader shot a 251 and finished tied for 110th.

Other Glenn Marshall shooters who competed in the boys elementary division included: Nathan Harrison (241), Mason Fish (236), Kyle Smith (235), Cameron Davis (235), Hunter Hughes (232), Jacob Willis (230), Zack Dalton (227), Brandon Campbell (223), Zach Voll (222), Ryan Burberry (204), Michael Sanon (186), Jared Willis (175), Nash Courtwright (167) and Brennan Fields (128).

Madison Southern’s Christian Carter was the only local shooter to compete in the boys middle school division. He finished with a score of 290.
