The Lady Patriots posted a pair of wins and took fourth place Saturday at the All “A” Classic State Softball Tournament in Louisville. Model (15-5) defeated Shelby Valley in the opener, then was knocked into the loser’s bracket with a 4-0 loss to eventual champion Reidland.
The 11th Region All “A” Champs bounced back to defeat Nicholas County before being eliminated by Hancock County, the tournament’s runner-up.
“We just kind of ran out of gas,” Model coach Kelli Bromley said.
Model jumped out to a lead in the tournament opener, then had to hold on a 4-3 win. Hannah Heath had a double and a single, Maggie Green had two hits, Emily Lowe had a double and a single and Madison Schneid had two singles.
Green started and went the first five innings without allowing a run. Tara Curtis gave up three runs in the sixth before Green, a left-handed pitcher, came back into the game to work the final inning.
Model was never able to get anything going in a second-round showdown with Reidland. The Lady Patriots got another solid start from Green, but were handed a shutout loss.
Against Nicholas County, Heath had two hits, Curtis had two doubles and Lowe had two singles in a 5-3 win.
In the tournament finale for Model, Hancock County picked up a 4-1 win. Curtis walked and scored the only run for the Lady Patriots.
Model is set to return to action Monday at Pulaski County.
