The old Madison Country Club was rocking on Derby Day. It all started with a country ham breakfast with all the trimmings, cooked up by a bunch of hams themselves, Kenny and Sondra Wilson, Buddy Stone and Burdette Blevins.
Then in the afternoon the gala occasion of watching the Derby with the pretty ladies all decked out in their party dresses and beautiful Derby hats and the men, some dressed in their Sunday-go-to-meeting clothes and some in golf attire.
Regardless of the clothes it was a wonderful day of old friends and new friends getting together and having a great time celebrating the Derby.
There was a delicious buffet of top round of beef, shrimp, meatballs, and an endless array of appetizers for the hungry revelers. For the sweet tooth there were Derby pies, lemon-frosted cakes and chocolate strawberries.
Wow!
I should mention that all the tables were tastefully decorated with vases of roses and horse and jockey figurines.
The co-chairmen for the party were Katy Stephenson and Jan Barnes with a lot of good help from their committee. They did a superb job of orchestrating a great and memorable party.
Hats off to all of you!
There was a nine-hole Derby scramble Sunday with 29 players teeing it up. There were seven four-person teams with five on one team that took to the links.
Stepping into the winner’s circle at the end of play was the team of Randy Jewell, Kim and Jerry Owens, and Dave and Glenda Dryden. They shot a six-under par 30 for the win. Coming in second with a 31 was the team of Nancy and Robby Robertson, Anthony Parks and Chenault Ray.
I enjoyed playing with Tommy Broaddus, Bruce and Lynn Lainhart and we missed second place by one shot.
Ouch!
It was a fun day and a great ending to a wonderful weekend at the old MCC. Special thanks to Hubert Broaddus and George Powell for putting this scramble together.
Lions Club Scramble at Battlefield
On Saturday, April 24, the Lions Club of Richmond teed it up in their first-ever Golf Scramble at the Battlefield Golf Course. Eleven four-man teams participated in this event.
After a beautiful day on the links, three teams gave par a thrashing with identical 17-under par 55s. After a scorecard match, the team picking up the loot was Ken Riley, Tyler Cain, Floyd Harding and Whitney Maupin. Second was Brad Brown, John Yellman, Brian Fox and Bruce Whitaker. Third place went to Brent Ray, A.D. Grant, Chad Gordon and Todd Christian.
In the Net Division, the winning team was Simon Mortimer, Brian Bucham, Randy Sulfridge and Wade Holland with a net 48. The second place team consisted of Sheldon Sharpe, Jeremy Rigney, Jerry Goble and Brandon Shively with a 50. Third was the team of Joe Chowning, Cliff Chambers, Jim Wagers and Billy Wagers with 51.
Special events winners were: Simon Mortimer — straight drive No. 1; Wesley Graves — long putt No. 8; Whitney Maupin — long drive No. 9; and Brad Brown — closest to the pin on No. 6.
Each winner won $50. Not a bad day of work!
Afterwards, all the players enjoyed refreshments and lunch on the porch and head pro Clay Hamrick awarded the prizes. It was a good start for the first golfing event by the Lions Club. Special thanks goes to chairman Sheldon Sharpe of the Lions Club and to Clay Hamrick for giving me these results.
Mahalo!
Hole-in-one club
On Sunday, April 27, Al Tribble aced the 221-yard No. 12 at Gibson Bay. He was playing with Jimmy Dunaway, Edwin Luxon and Rick Howard.
You da man, Al! I get more strokes next time we play.
I can’t even hit the ball 221 yards. Ouch!
