RICHMOND —
For the second time in the less than two weeks, Lafayette rallied late to pick up a victory over the Madison Central baseball team. The Generals scored eight times in the sixth inning and went on for a 10-3 win Thursday in Lexington.
With the loss, the Indians fall to 12-9 on the season, while Lafayette improves to 13-12.
Central had just four hits, but held a 3-2 lead going into the sixth inning. After the Generals went up 1-0 in the first, the Indians pulled even in the second when Zac Coldiron doubled and scored on a single by Austin Hunt.
Lafayette went back in front in the fourth on an RBI single by Johnny Youngblood. The Indians responded with two runs in the fifth.
Daniel Winkler walked, Tyler Mays reached on a bunt and an error on the same play allowed the tying run to cross the plate. Mays stole third and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Winkler pitched well, giving up only two runs and three hits through the first five innings, but he allowed the first three batters to reach in the sixth (two walks and a hit batter) before Coldiron took over.
The Generals had just three hits in the inning, but five walks and two hit batters helped fuel the rally.
Clint Daughtery came on and got the final two outs of the inning.
In the championship game of the Tomahawk Classic April 20 in Richmond, Lafayette scored seven runs in the eighth inning to pick up a 14-7 extra-inning victory over Central.
The Indians return to action today at Lee County. Game time is 6 p.m.
Berea 8, Burgin 3
Sarah Haycraft had two hits, including a home run, scored twice and drove in two runs as the Berea Community softball team picked up an 8-3 win over Burgin Thursday at home.
The Lady Pirates (9-8) scored a run in the first and second innings, before adding four more scores in the third. They later scored twice more in the fourth.
Sarah Thomas, Sophia Shearer, Brittany Hogg, Kayla Hurst, Kayla Paynter, Taylor Winstead and Shelby Renzenbrink each had a hit as Berea finished with nine hits. Thomas, Hogg, Paynter and Winstead each scored a run and Hurst scored twice.
Hogg, Hurst and Winstead also had RBIs.
Renzenbrink went the distance allowing five hits and only one earned run. She struck out four and walked two as Burgin left eight runners on base.
The Lady Pirates return to action today at Paris.
