Brislyn Sizemore provided the spark that ignited the Lady Indians’ high-powered offense during a late-season cross-county showdown Thursday in Richmond.
The sophomore hit the first home run of career as Madison Central (16-8) pounded out 13 hits and cruised to a 10-0 six-inning win over Madison Southern (7-14). Sizemore had three hits, scored three times and drove in two runs and Carrie Campbell allowed just three hits as the Lady Indians picked up their seventh win in their last eight games.
“That woke us up a little bit,” Central coach Doug Cornett said of Sizemore’s home run. “And she’s been due. She hits the ball very hard in practice and I’ve been expecting (a home run) for quite a while.”
Central never trailed, but was only able to push across one run off Southern starter Jackie Young through the first three innings.
Sizemore led off the fourth with a lined shot over the left field fence and the Lady Indians added two more runs later in the inning on a single by Christina Ciolek.
“I usually can’t hit high pitches and that one was a high pitch,” Sizemore said. “I just swung at it, hoping I could hit it and it went where it was supposed to go.”
Central got two more runs in the fifth. Danelle Johnson led-off the inning with a walk and scored on a single by Sizemore. The sophomore later crossed the plate on a groundout by senior Megan Lowery.
The Lady Indians ended the game by adding four more runs in the sixth. Junior Lyndsay Jones had an RBI single, catcher Devin Foster also had an RBI single and Johnson had an RBI ground out.
“We pick it up when we need to pick it up and we just play as a team,” Sizemore said.
Campbell, a freshman, gave up just three singles and never really got into trouble. The Lady Eagles had two runners on in the second and sixth, but never had anyone advance to third base.
Campbell struck out five and walked just one.
“She’s been consistent all year,” Cornett said of Campbell. “She works hard and swings the bat well too.”
Candice Himes, Brooke Casteel and Stephanie Mazurek had the only hits for Southern.
Central is set to return to action May 8 at Lafayette.
