Indians comeback in last at bat, 3-2

Special to the Register

Madison Central rallied for two runs in its last at bat to knock off No. 26 ranked Lafayette, 3-2, to win the Tomahawk Classic at Don Richardson Field for the fifth straight year.

Trailing 2-1, Indian third baseman Daniel Abrams reached second base on an error with one out. Central second baseman Ken DeGrant then lined a 1-1 pitch into the gap in left center field off reliever Caleb Clements to score Abrams and tie the game, 2-2.

Lafayette (12-6) then changed pitchers, bringing in right-hander Paul Stice. He walked shortstop Tyler Weaver intentionally and, after DeGrant and Weaver pulled off a double steal, Stice walked center fielder Michael Kelley intentionally to load the bases with one out.

The Generals went to the bullpen for another right-hander, Gardner Adams. However, his first two pitches were low and out of the strike zone to designated hitter Austin Hunt. His third pitch bounced in front of the plate and got by Generals’ catcher Daniel Palombi for a wild pitch as DeGrant scampered home with the winning run to complete the comeback.

Central senior left-hander Kyle Stinson and Lafayette senior right-hander Jason Langfels battled in a tough pitching duel for five innings with the Generals clinging to a 1-0 lead. Lafayette upped that margin to 2-0 in the sixth, scoring an unearned run.

The Indians (9-5) got that run back in the bottom of the sixth when DeGrant reached on a bunt single, stole second, went to third on Weaver’s ground out and came home on an infield single by Kelley, trimming the margin to 2-1 and setting up the seventh inning fireworks.

Stinson went the distance, scattering nine hits, while striking out six and walking one in raising his record to 2-1 on the year.

DeGrant and Kelley led Central with two hits each, while Weaver, Hunt and first baseman Stevie Winkler each had one hit.

Central travels to Western Hills Monday night.

Indians lose to Cougars

Letcher County Central (12-5) put together a three-run rally in the third inning and followed that up with two more runs in the fourth in defeating Madison Central 6-3 in the Tomahawk Classic played Saturday at Don Richardson Field.

The Indians had staked senior right-hander Davey Pugh to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on back-to-back-to-back doubles off the bats of Daniel Winkler, A.J. Roberts and Daniel Abrams.

But, the Cougars scored three runs on three hits in the third and scored two more in the fourth on a solo home run by catcher Mike Hogg and run-scoring ground out by second baseman Tanner Sexton.

Central cut the lead to 5-3 on two Cougar errors in the fourth, but Letcher County Central got that run back in the seventh on a walk, a stolen base and a two-out RBI single by Hogg.

Senior right-hander Skyler Sexton went the distance for the Cougars, allowing six hits, while striking out nine Indians and not walking anyone. Pugh pitched 41/3 innings for the Indians, giving up six hits, while striking out three and walking one to see his season’s record drop to 2-1. Winkler pitched the final 22/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out three batters and walking two.

Tyler Weaver, Michael Kelley, Austin Hunt, Winkler, Roberts and Abrams each had one hit for the Indians, now 8-5 on the year.
