Madison Special Olympics team wins silver

Gold, silver, bronze won in individual events

RICHMOND — The 27 members of Madison County’s Special Olympics team had a great day Saturday as Eastern Kentucky University hosted the state summer games for the 20th year, said team coordinator Eden Fisher.

The weather was beautiful as Madison County’s seven-member flag football team brought home the silver medal, she said.

The 20 team members who competed in track and field events also did very well, winning gold, silver or bronze medals, Fisher said. Others came in fourth or fifth in their events.

“This is probably the most anticipated event of the year,” Fisher said. “And the team’s hard work and dedication really paid off.”

The team has been growing and progressing every year, she added, and has even higher expectations for next year’s games.

About 5,000 people came to support or compete in the games, representing all 120 Kentucky counties.

Volunteers guided teams from event to event and performed other tasks throughout the two-day event, Fisher said.
