Free Diabetes Day Health Fair Saturday at First Christian Church

RICHMOND — The 10th annual Diabetes Day Health Fair, hosted by the Madison County Diabetes Coalition and Eastern Kentucky University baccalaureate nursing students, is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The free event will take place at First Christian Church on Main Street.

Participants can receive free kidney screenings, eye exams, diabetic foot exams and other diabetes health services, according to the organizers.

The fair also will feature various giveaways.

Diabetes is a serious and potentially life-threatening illness that affects people of all ages, race and ethnicity. It is the seventh leading cause of death in Kentucky and annually costs Kentuckians nearly $3 billion, said Kim DeCoste of the coalition.

Diabetes is prevalent across the United States, but is the sixth leading cause of death in Kentucky. One in seven Kentuckians has diabetes and 40 percent of those ages 40 to 70 have pre-diabetes and are at a high risk of developing the disease, DeCoste said.

Many of the problems associated with diabetes can be eliminated or reduced through preventative measures, screenings, education, proper care, nutrition and treatment.
