Festival points to a sustainable future

From solar power to 'edible streets'

BEREA — Sustainable Berea hosted its eighth-annual Solar Tour and first-ever Resilient Community Fair on Saturday.

The Solar Tour highlighted some of the best uses of solar energy and the most resilient households in the community, including the Berea Municipal Solar Farm. The 28,200 kW system is Kentucky's only community solar installation.

Old Town Berea was the site of the Resilient Community Fair, where crowds gathered to learn more about resilient households, eat locally-grown/produced food, and enjoy an afternoon of music, dancing and community-building.

Mayor Steve Connelly handed out slices of a 3-foot by 4-foot cake in the shape of a street made by Berean Linda Cope. The cake was inspired by Sustainable Berea’s Edible Streets Project, a initiative to increase the city’s food supply by planting fruit and nut trees along city streets.

All of the donated home-baked pies (including a gluten-free one) disappeared after a spirited auction. Half of the proceeds will go toward Berea Community School’s farm and garden projects.

Around 2 p.m., students from the Berea College Concert Choir emerged from the crowd singing “Shenandoah” and climbed onto the front porch of the Welcome Center cabin to wrap up their performance with “Earth Song.”

The Berea College Country Dancers continued the afternoon entertainment with a variety of folk dances.
