Training for teen court begins soon

RICHMOND — The first training session necessary to be a Madison County Teen Court volunteer will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Madison County Hall of Justice on Main Street on the following dates: Sept. 22, Sept. 29, Oct. 6, Oct. 13 and Oct. 20.

Judge Brandy Oliver Brown presides over Madison County Teen Court, which is a program offered by the Kentucky Court of Justice that provides first-time juvenile offenders the opportunity to participate in a less formal court process carried out by their peers. Student volunteers are trained in courtroom roles such as prosecutor, defense attorney, clerk, bailiff and juror.

Cases will be referred to Teen Court, where volunteers will serve as the prosecutor, defense attorney, bailiff, the clerk or juror. Teen Court student volunteers decide the punishment for juvenile offenders. The punishments rendered by the Madison County Teen Court are legally binding.

In order to participate, high school student volunteers must be between the ages of 13-17, complete five training sessions and take an oath of confidentiality at a formal swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 27.

Anyone interested in becoming a Teen Court student volunteer should contact Teen Court Coordinator Jennifer Webb at 624-4719 (Ext. 1) or e-mail her at
