BPD: Woman got donations for missing teen, kept money

FRANKFORT — A woman who claimed she was collecting money to aid in the search from a missing Berea teen was arrested Tuesday and charged with theft of identity and theft by deception, according to a Berea police news release.

BPD officers were called to the Berea Tourism Center after receiving a report that a woman was soliciting donations. The woman told people that she was from a local church, and she was collecting money for the family of Brookelyn Farthing, according to the report.

Farthing, 18, of the Red Lick/Big Hill area, was reported missing June 22. She was last seen at a home in southeastern Madison County.

The woman, later identified as 21-year-old Amanda Griffey of Berea, had collected $10 each from two people before she was stopped by officers on North Broadway, the BPD reported.

The officers also reported Griffey had previously gotten $20 from another person Saturday after telling the same story. She gave that person another name and signed a receipt with another person’s name, according to the BPD.

The BPD says Griffey admitted that she was not collecting money for Farthing’s family, and she also was not with a church. She was keeping the money for herself, according to the report.

Griffey was arrested and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.
