Habitat dedicated 100th home Thursday

RICHMOND — More than 60 former and current staff members, volunteers and partners showed up Thursday to celebrate the Habitat for Humanity of Madison & Clark Counties' 100th home dedication at 107 E. Walnut Street in Richmond.

It is the new home of Ron Cochran, a retired roofer, and his wife Marsha, a retired educator.

The Cochran family was very dedicated to the work being done on their home, said Kelly Asher, Habitat construction assistant.

“Ron brought a lot of experience to the table,” Asher said of working with the couple. “He led the roofing stage of his own home, and Marsha would often bring us fudge to the work site.”

During their “alternative spring break” in March, students from Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., helped install most of the wall insulation and siding for the 1,070-square-foot home.

Two other school groups also volunteered on the build.

The local Habitat for Humanity unit partners with volunteers, community members and families in need to provide decent, affordable housing in Richmond as well as Berea and Winchester.

Work already has begun on its 101st house at 420 W. Walnut St. in Richmond.
