Skies clear for RAAC Derby Brunch

RICHMOND — Cloudy skies cleared by midmorning Saturday creating a pleasant day for the annual Derby Brunch hosted by the Richmond Area Arts Council at White Hall State Historic Site.

The brunch featured a number of activities for adults and children. Tables were set up where anyone could decorate a derby hat or horseshoe, purchase goodies from a bake sale or get a picture taken in a photo booth.

Children participated in stick-horse and bounce-horse races across the lawn. Participants were grouped based on age and size, and they ran a mini-derby for first, second and third place medals.

Trumpeter Steven Thompson played the call to post before each race.

Afterward, those age 7 and younger competed in cupcake hunts on the White Hall property.

In addition, children took part in two maypole dances during the brunch.

Live music was provided by the EKU Guitar Trio and RAAC’s Treble Clef Youth Chorus, who sang “My Old Kentucky Home.”

Deborah Kidd, executive director of RAAC and director of the Treble Clefs Youth Chorus, said this year’s turnout was high despite the foreboding clouds earlier in the morning.

“It’s about double what we had last year,” Kidd said. “The weather held out, and that’s just very good.”

Tours of the White Hall mansion were included with admission to the RAAC Derby Brunch.
