Public programs Sunday, Monday mark Veterans Day

RICHMOND — Public ceremonies will be conducted Sunday in Berea and Monday in Richmond in observance of Veterans Day.

Local veterans groups in conjunction with Berea city government will present a program 2 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Park on Jefferson Street.

The Madison Southern High School Junior ROTC Corps will present the colors and a detachment from the Marine Corps League will fire a 21-gun salute and play “Taps” at the ceremony’s conclusion.

Berea Mayor Steve Connelly will speak and also read the names of U.S. military personnel killed in action, which are listed on the Memorial Park monument.

At 3 p.m. Sunday in Richmond, the Madison Community Band will be joined by the Madison Central High School Wind Ensemble in performing a musical tribute to veterans in the school’s auditorium. In addition to a number of patriotic pieces, the concert will feature the songs for each service branch when veterans will be asked to stand.

Eastern Kentucky University will hold its annual Veterans’ Day Recognition Service at 1:40 p.m. Monday outside the Powell Building.

The day’s activities begin at 6:30 a.m. with the reading of the names of more than 6,700 fallen veterans from the recent combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. The reading will continue until about 1:30 p.m.

The 1:40 p.m. program will include presentation of the “Talk of Heroes” essay student winner, and participation in a national moment of silence at 2 p.m., as well as remarks from EKU President Michael Benson and others.

A memorial bench will be dedicated at 2:30 p.m. in adjacent Memorial Plaza in honor of Dr. Robert J. Topmiller and Robert Hundley Jr.
