The Telford YMCA kicked off its Magnify the Impact fundraising campaign at the end of September, and Director Dave Wallace said the results so far have been promising.
The campaign is designed to help deserving Richmond residents afford Y memberships. The funds also will be used to sponsor children in the day care program. The goal for the campaign, which ends Dec. 31, is to raise $40,000. So far, $10,000 has been raised, Wallace said.
Donors have various options for giving, he added. The amount of money can range from $50 to $2,500, and if requested, the money can be designated for a specific program the Y provides.
Families or individuals wishing to take advantage of the financial assistance made possible by the fundraiser may sign up at the Y. Applicants are asked to fill out a form and provide proof of income before being registered. After their application is reviewed, a portion of the standard $52-a-month fee will be paid from the funding, leaving a smaller amount to be paid by the new member.
“These dollars don’t go to pay the light bill,” Wallace said. “They go to give services to those that can’t afford them.”
He said the campaign speaks to the mission of the Y, which was established to be a community center and “not just a gym.”
“The Y is one of the few places that truly brings together people from all backgrounds,” Wallace said. “A wealthy, well-to-do man can be working out next to a man on financial assistance, and neither one of them knows the other’s situation, and they’re having a conversation.”
Wallace said the name “Magnify the Impact” was chosen as a way to raise awareness of the organization as a partner in the community.
YMCA employee Pam Bartley, who helped organize the campaign, said the organization has been blessed with generous donors.
“I was giving a family a tour the other day and the woman asked me, ‘How do you all run this place?’” Bartley said. “It’s through people who want to help.
Wallace said the Telford Y has historically raised about $60,000 a year, enough to help between 250-300 people.
