Woman leads police on high-speed pursuit through downtown

RICHMOND — A high-speed pursuit through downtown Richmond on Tuesday evening ended in the arrest of a woman police believe was intoxicated.

Lynda K. Jones, 55, was charged with first-degree fleeing/evading police, second-degree assault, two counts of second-degree wanton endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, speeding (26 mph or more), driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and four counts of disregarding a traffic-control device.

A patrol officer saw a vehicle driven by Jones going in circles along the Eastern Bypass near the entrances of Richmond Mall and Carriage Gate Shopping Center, according to an RPD news release.

The officer reported seeing Jones make eight circles, and when the officer tried to make a traffic stop, she fled toward Big Hill Avenue. While approaching Big Hill Avenue, Jones struck a stopped vehicle in the rear, pushing it out of the way, the release stated.

Jones continued through downtown at a high rate of speed onto Lexington Road where police ended their pursuit because of the danger to the public, according to the RPD.

She was apprehended a short time later when her vehicle became stranded in a ditch at a road construction site at Irvine Road and the Robert R. Martin Bypass.

The woman attempted to flee on foot but was detained by a Madison County Sheriff’s deputy.

Jones was still incarcerated in the Madison County Detention Center Wednesday evening under a $2,500 bond.

The driver of the vehicle Jones struck complained of neck and back pain but opted to seek medical treatment on her own.
