Inmate hanged himself inside Madison jail

RICHMOND — The state medical examiner’s office confirmed Monday that a 28-year-old Madison County Detention Center inmate died Saturday by hanging himself, according to Coroner Jimmy Cornelison.

Charles Franklin Hoffman, 28, of Hastings, Mich., was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 at the Madison County Detention Center.

Hoffman was being held at the jail under a “fugitive from another state” holder, according to Jailer Doug Thomas. Thomas said Hoffman had been wanted on a parole violation warrant out of Michigan.

The Grand Rapids (Michigan) newspaper reported that Hoffman “was sentenced in 2007 to three to 10 years in prison for operating motor vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury. He was also sentenced to a lesser term for delivery/manufacture of marijuana, records showed.”

Hoffman was arrested Oct. 14 by a Berea Police Department officer, according to the detention center’s website.

Hoffman was alone in an isolation cell at the time of his death, Thomas said. However, he was unable to give the reason for Hoffman being in isolation and was not sure whether Hoffman had previously spoken about taking his own life.

Cornelison said Hoffman hanged himself with part of a bed sheet.

“I believe it was part of a sheet,” Cornelison said. “It was too long to be a pillowcase.”

“When I got up there, they had already taken whatever he hung himself with off,” Thomas said. “They (jail staff) were doing CPR, but when I got there he was already on the floor.”

Thomas said this is the first time an inmate has died in the detention center since he took office in January 2011. To the best of his knowledge, Thomas said Hoffman was not under any sort of suicide-watch by jail personnel.

The case remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police Post 7 in Richmond.
