2nd annual Veterans Day Chili Cook-off and Tailgate Saturday

Special to the Register

RICHMOND — The Veteran’s Day Chili Cook-off and Tailgate is scheduled for Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the Eastern Kentucky University Alumni Coliseum parking lot near the Kentucky State Police Post.

Admission is $5 for “all the chili you care to taste,” said Matthew Rawlings, president of the EKU Veteran’s Club. Admission is free for those with a chili entry.

Everyone will have a chance to win prizes from local businesses, including a copy of Call of Duty Black Ops 2 from Richmond Underground. The winner of the cook-off also will receive a prize.

“There will be tailgating with veterans, so bring your family out for some food and fun,” Rawlings said.

All proceeds will go to Operation Vets Success and EKU Vets to help fund events, activities and programs to assist student veterans and their families assimilating from the military to being a student, he said.

One such program is Books for Boots, which helps veterans purchase books for their classes when the cost exceeds what the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will cover.
