Actor to portray Col. Sanders on Thursday at Eastern

RICHMOND — One of Kentucky’s most recognized figures, Harland “Colonel” Sanders, will come to life in a one-man performance at Eastern Kentucky University on Thursday, Oct. 18.

L. Henry Dowell, an actor/director/playwright with central Kentucky roots, will portray the Kentucky Fried Chicken founder in an EKU Chautauqua presentation at 7:30 p.m. in O’Donnell Hall of the Student Success Building. The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Kentucky Humanities Council, the EKU Department of English and Theatre and Alpha Psi Omega, the EKU chapter of the National Theater Honor Society.

Dowell is the founding director of the Gusto Theatre Company, for which he directs a full-time children’s theater program. The author of more than 35 published plays, he received a bachelor’s degree in theater from Morehead State University and attended The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.

In 1930, Sanders opened a lunchroom behind a service station in Corbin. His restaurant grew quickly in popularity and, in a short time, he was operating Sanders Café, which seated 142 patrons. His customers made fried chicken the most requested item on the menu. The construction of Interstate 75 curtailed his Corbin business, but it was the impetus for Sanders to launch what became one of the world’s most successful food franchises.
