Model Laboratory Elementary School celebrated the Lunar New Year on Wednesday with a Dragon Parade.
The celebration was designed to include a range of disciplines in the arts, said Denise Discepoli, assistant professor/visual arts specialist at the school.
Students explored Asian calligraphy and sculpture in addition to learning the dragon dance and different Asian rhythms, she said.
During the parade, all students come out of their classes to line the halls and help “bring in” the new year, which, according to traditional beliefs, will bring good luck to the school for 2013, Discepoli said.
The entire school got involved with the celebration by creating Asian cultural art objects for the festival. Kindergarten students made lanterns, first-graders created fans, second-graders made fish kites, third-graders made the dragons, fourth-graders created Happi coats and fifth-graders designed asymmetrical composition paintings.
