Funny money makes its way to McDonald’s

BEREA — Two separate customers who stopped at the same McDonald’s on two separate occasions for a late-night bite each left the fast-food place $20 poorer.

They unwittingly tried to pay for their food with funny money, Berea police said.

The customers were not arrested for the counterfeit cash, but police officers did seize the $20 bills as evidence. The customers paid for their meals with other cash from their pockets, said Capt. Ken Clark, public information officer at the Berea Police Department.

“They didn’t look at their change,” Clark said.

Employees at the McDonald’s, located off I-75 at 109 Berenwood Lane, caught the first counterfeit $20 at 10:39 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22 when a drive-through customer used it to pay for food.

“Some of the counterfeit money is so bad,” Clark said. “It is very easy to detect.”

McDonald’s called Berea police while they detained the customer. Officers interviewed the customer, who told them he received the phony bill from a Marathon gas station in London.

Four days later, a second counterfeit $20 bill made its way through the same drive-through window at 10:45 p.m. on June 25, Clark said. Again, employees recognized the funny money. Again, police were called. Again, another customer was out $20 bucks.

“The people were very forthright with us,” Clark said. “The money is out of circulation. We’re satisfied.”

Ultimately, the counterfeit cash will be delivered to the Secret Service, he said.

Police advise people to look carefully at their change when shopping. Check for several bills of the same denomination bearing sequential serial numbers. Check for a watermark, which is visible when you hold a bill up to the light. If you are not certain, take the money to a bank or police department and have an expert determine if it is fake.

Don’t expect to get the cash back, if it is.
