Shooting which had been ruled accidental goes to grand jury

RICHMOND — A Madison grand jury will hear the case of a shooting originally ruled an accident, but later resulted in a first-degree assault charge.

Denver Rearick, 27, was charged June 21 by Kentucky State Police for allegedly shooting another Madison County man in the face.

Rearick was released June 23 from the Madison County Detention Center on a partially secured $50,000 bond, according to district court records.

The shooting occurred Jan. 22 on Waco Loop Road.

Matthew C. Richie, 26, and Rearick reportedly were intoxicated when they decided to twirl around handguns, according to KSP Trooper Chris Lanham.

Richie was shot in the face by a .45-caliber pistol owned by Rearick, and was sent to the hospital, according to police.

“Regardless of whether it was intentional, it was reckless behavior on the suspect’s part,” Lanham said.

Richie has been moved from the University of Kentucky Medical Center to Cardinal Hill Hospital in Lexington, where he is rehabilitating.

“He’s not out of the woods yet, as far as his life goes,” Lanham said.

If Richie does not survive, Lanham said, the charges against Rearick could be upgraded, but he does not yet know that for sure.

First-degree assault is a Class B felony.
