Sand artist, pastry chef wow audience at cake expo

RICHMOND — Joe Castillo dazzled audiences while performing at Eastern Kentucky University’s Center for the Arts Saturday during the Grace with Taste Cake Expo.

Castillo, along with pastry chef Stella Parks, were the entertainment acts at the expo early in the afternoon.

The expo also featured a cake-baking competition, judged in the morning, displays from local businesses and a silent auction. All funds raised from the event went to support the Grace Now food pantry in Richmond.

Sherry Robinson, Grace Now director, said the turnout was lower than she had hoped, but the event went well.

“What was fun about today was people enjoyed the cakes,” Robinson said. “The silent auction went very well; we got a lot of bids.”

Several local bakeries had tables set up as well and were selling some of their products.

Robinson said Castillo and his unique sand art was another draw for people, both fans and those who were curious about him.

Parks’s presentation on how to make butter cream was enjoyed too, and she gave free samples of her cakes after the presentation.

“I really appreciate both of the people who performed for us,” Robinson said.

She also thanked two local churches and a business that helped make the expo happen, Union City Christian Church, Crossroads Christian Church and Ideal Automation.

Robinson said Grace Now may host a similar event next spring, but it will likely be scaled back to focus more on the cakes.
