Humane Society Clinic celebrates 1,000 spay/neuter milestone

RICHMOND — The Humane Society/Animal League for Life spay and neuter clinic on Big Hill Avenue broke 1,000 surgeries Monday with Dexter the cat being the lucky recipient of the milestone procedure.

The clinic, which operates three Mondays a month, has had 30 surgery days since July 31, 2012, director Arlene Turner said.

The high number of surgeries in less than a year are due to the skill of Lorie Fuller, the clinic's veterinarian, Turner added.

“Lorie specializes in surgery,” Turner said. “Her clinical skills are excellent, and that's how they can move so fast.”

The clinic has averaged between 25 to 35 surgeries every clinic day and, with the exception of Fuller, is run entirely by trained volunteers.

The clinic recently received a $3,000 grant targeting pit bulls and pit bull mixes in Madison County. While those funds last, pit bull owners can bring the dogs in to get them spayed or neutered for free.

In addition, the HSALL will host its fourth annual golf tournament to raise funds for medical supplies and surgical equipment.

The tournament is June 8 at Gibson Bay Golf Course. Anyone can play or sponsor a hole for $75. Funds raised will go toward purchasing a surgery table and lamp for the clinic.
