‘PAWS’ and hang out for a while

EKU students de-stress before finals

RICHMOND — More than a dozen certified therapy dogs lounged around Eastern Kentucky University’s campus Wednesday to help students de-stress the week before final exams.

The program is a collaboration between the EKU Counseling Center and Pawsibilities Unleashed, canine behavioral specialists out of Frankfort.

For the dogs, “it’s the best job in the world,” said one student helping to chaperone Jade, a 5-year-old Plott Hound.

The dogs hung out around the Powell Building, the campus recreation center, and the Crabbe Library.

Pawsibilities Unleashed therapy dog teams travel throughout Kentucky to schools, hospitals, libraries and nursing homes.

Several of the dogs make regular appearances at the Madison County Public Library’s Richmond location for PAWS to Read.

The program gives children the opportunity to practice their reading skills for a furry and attentive audience.

The next PAWS to Read is scheduled Monday (May6).
