Heavy rains cause flooding, accidents in Richmond

RICHMOND — Heavy rains Sunday evening and Monday afternoon caused flooding on several streets in Richmond and a number of accidents, including a motorist being stranded by flood waters.

According to Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock, officers responded at about 10:17 p.m. Sunday night to a vehicle that was trapped by flooding on Catalpa Loop near the veterinary clinic. Brock said the motorist was rescued by police officers, and the vehicle was towed away.

According to the Kentucky Mesonet, a weather-tracking system developed by Western Kentucky University, Madison County has received 4.63 inches of rain in July as of Sunday.

Monday afternoon, several injury accidents were reported because of wet driving conditions. Large puddles of water formed on several streets in the downtown area, including Water Street and parts of Main Street. However, downtown wasn't the only area affected by the flooding.

Jennifer Hall, a resident of East Walnut Street, said since last night, the rain had “washed away” her gravel driveway. She said she has sandbags lined up to keep the water from leaking into her kitchen.

“The sandbags have kept the water out,” Hall said. “But I can't live with sandbags.”

On Sunset Avenue, much of the rain water was collected in pools inside the rain gardens lining the street. Some of the gardens themselves began to overflow, however, and flooded the sidewalks nearby.

Despite the persistent rain, Mayor Jim Barnes, City Manager Jimmy Howard and Planning Commission Chair Jason Hart all said they had not received calls from Richmond residents reporting flooding of personal property. Hart said reports from the public works office regarding floods to which they responded would likely be delivered to him within a week. He requested that anyone who has experienced flooding to email pictures to his office at eking@richmond.ky.us so each case can be addressed and documented.
