Special to the Register
Madison County Public Library’s founding director, the late Sue Hays, recently was awarded one of the state’s top honors for public librarians.
The Margaret Willis Award for Outstanding Community Service was presented posthumously at the 2013 Kentucky Public Library Association Conference in Lexington earlier this month.
Members of Hays’ family, including her daughters Bridget Szczapinski and Andrea Perkins, accepted the award on her behalf.
The Margaret Willis Award recognizes achievements by certified county and regional library staff who have made outstanding contributions to the development and promotion of public library service on the local level. This award is named in honor of Miss Margaret F. Willis, former state librarian, because of her interest in and emphasis on county public library service.
The awards committee assessed nominees’ accomplishments in the areas of library service, community service, library programming, achievement of community support, and professional development.
