BEREA —

The Berea Arts Council is replacing chili with roast beef at this year’s annual fundraiser Stepping Out for Art, previously known as A Chili Night Out.

Having served chili for almost 10 years, BAC director Gwen Childs said she “thought it would be nice to change it up a bit.”

Stepping Out for Art is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Armed Forces Reserve Center, 233 Battlefield Memorial Hwy. (US 421, Richmond.

The evening will begin with hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction, followed by a catered dinner prepared by Berea College.

The dinner will include roast beef, chicken, salad, vegetable dishes, yeast rolls, red velvet cake and cheesecake, Child said, along with a cash bar serving wine, beer and mixed drinks.

The live auction will start after dinner with the Rev. Kent Gilbert (of Union Church) “wielding the gavel and entertaining the crowd,” Childs said.

All auction items have been donated by more than 85 local and regional artists and include pottery, textiles, paintings, mixed media, art quilts, woodworking, jewelry and handwoven baskets.

“We really wanted to showcase the talent of artists in Berea,” says Robert Boyce, chair of BAC’s exhibition committee. “It’s part of our ongoing mission to support local artists.”

All of the artworks to be auctioned are on display in a special preview exhibit until Feb. 7 at the BAC’s Gallery, 116 Main St., Berea. Prospective bidders can view the art up close and at their leisure prior to the event.

Artwork also can be viewed on the BAC website, www.bereaartscouncil.org under the “Photo Galleries” drop-down menu.

Event tickets can be purchased at the BAC gallery, Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They also can be reserved by calling 985-9317 or emailing info@bereaartscouncil.org.

Prices are $30 for BAC members and $35 for non-members. Non-members who join by Feb. 1 may purchase up to two tickets for $20 each.

Proceeds from the event will help fund BAC’s annual events, exhibits and programs.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, supports the Berea Arts Council with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
