Field day to showcase ham radio capabilities

RICHMOND — Local amateur radio operators will gather at Camp Catalpa Park this weekend to demonstrate the capabilities of ham radio.

From 2 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday, visitors can stop by the park to see demonstrations and get more information on how to get involved.

The park is located on the east side of Lake Reba off Irvine Road

The field day is the final event of national Amateur Radio Week, when similar groups across the U.S. host similar demonstrations. Last year more than 35,000 radio operators across the country participated in the activities.

“We hope that people will come and see for themselves that this is not your grandfather’s radio anymore,” Herb Pettit, president of the Central Kentucky Amateur Radio Society, said in a press release.

“The communications that ham radio people can quickly create have saved many lives when other systems failed or overloaded. And besides that, it’s fun.”

There are more than 685,000 amateur radio licensees in the U.S. Operators have provided critical communications in the event of emergencies and disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina and the California wildfires.
