One of the two Republicans who filed last month to oppose Rita Smart in the 81st District House of Representatives race has withdrawn.
Bonnie Linnemeier, of Richmond, issued a statement via email about leaving the race Thursday afternoon.
“I am thankful for the overwhelming support my friends and neighbors gave me as they encouraged me to get in the race, and I remain grateful to them,” Linnemeier said.
Linnemeier said that having a conservative representing the 81st District was key to getting Kentuckians back to work, creating jobs and improving education.
“That is why I wholeheartedly support and endorse Wesley Morgan for state representative,” Linnemeier said. “He will represent our community very well and will work to provide serious solutions to these serious issues Kentucky faces.”
Because of Linnemeier’s withdrawal, Morgan, owner of Liquor World in Richmond, will be unopposed in the May Republican primary. No Democrats filed to oppose Smart’s run for a third term.
The 81st District represents all of Richmond and a corridor reaching south along Interstate 75 and US 25 to take in a small portion of Berea.
