BAC summer camp explores a variety of arts

BEREA — This year, summer camps sponsored by the Berea Arts Council included elements of dance, drama and craft-making, as well as the the exploration of visual art “outside the box.”

“Many of these kids had never used fire clay,” said camp director Courtney Howard. “This camp gave them a chance to experience something new and different.”

For the past two weeks, students from the Berea College Craft department instructed children in the arts of pottery, weaving and broom-making. By week’s end, the children took home their own woven brooms and fired-clay whistles and pinch pots.

Through each week, campers received instruction in dance from choreographer Katrina Martir, drama from Berea Community School teacher Tina Williams and music with local performer Mitch Barrett.

Jessamine County art teacher Staci Goggins returned this year to teach visual art lessons in tie-dye, paper marbling and batik.

The week-long camps began June 10 for 6 to 8 year-olds and June 17 for 9 to 12 year-olds. At the close of each camp, parents were invited to enjoy an unscripted performance showcasing what campers had learned.
