BPD: Man charged with clubbing victim outside hospital

BEREA — A fight Thursday night near the entrance to the emergency room at St. Joseph Berea hospital landed two men in jail.

Berea police received a call about the disturbance at 8:38 p.m., according to BPD Captain Ken Clark.

“There were three males and two females involved in the melee,” Clark said.

When officers arrived at the hospital, they saw one of the men lying on the sidewalk. Witnesses told police that “clubs, knives and a handgun” had been wielded by the people involved in the fight.

The victim told police that 25-year-old Herbert Wayne Harrison, of Berea, had struck him in the head with a small wooden bat. The man had visible wounds to his temples and was treated at the hospital, Clark said.

Harrison was charged with second-degree assault and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

A second man involved in the fight, 44-year-old Billy Joe Isaacs, of Berea, also was arrested and charged with menacing and second-degree possession of a controlled substance.

The arresting officer said Isaacs initially refused to comply with his orders and took a menacing stance.

After Isaacs was in custody, he was searched and officers found one and a half white oval tablets in a vial that was suspected to be hydrocodone, Clark said.
