County school board will postpone dropout age resolution

RICHMOND — Acting on advice from the board’s attorney, Madison County School Board Chair Mona Isaacs said Monday that a resolution raising the dropout age will not be voted upon at this week's meeting.

Last week, the Kentucky Board of Education urged school districts to raise the compulsory school attendance age from 16 to 18 effective in the 2015-16 school year.

Recent legislation mandates that once 55 percent of districts have adopted the dropout age policy, the remaining districts will have to sign on within four years.

However, the board “will not be voting on raising the limit until the legislation goes into effect June 25,” Isaacs said. “Any vote we take now could be challenged.”

The board will discuss the issue during Thursday’s meeting, she said.

This month’s regular school board meeting has been moved from Madison Central High School to 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Madison Southern High School in Berea.

“I think (the dropout policy adoption) is a very important move for Madison County,” Isaacs said. “I want people to talk about it among themselves and with us.”
