Race prompts burst of color for charities

RICHMOND — A kaleidoscope of colors covered shoes, hands and even eyelashes Saturday at the second Color of Maroon 5K at Eastern Kentucky University.

“Color-blast squads” along a route through campus didn’t miss covering much more than a spot or two of every runner with brightly colored powder.

After registration and a zumba session, runners of all ages began the non-competitive race at the EKU intramural fields. They were released in groups to begin their treks through color stations of green, blue, purple and pink.

Running, skipping and making vibrant snow angels, participants eventually ended at a dance party as vivid as the route itself.

With color packets provided in their registration kits, as well as additional freebies thrown from the stage, numerous countdowns signaled for the crowd to toss their packets into the air in color cloud-bursts. The celebration ended with recognition of EKU senior Kevin Morgan who has organized the first two Color of Maroon events.

Last summer, Morgan was an intern with an organization that hosted similar events. When he returned to school in the fall and the EKU Runner’s Club reconvened, he was prepared to orchestrate something similar at EKU.

About 1,000 took part in the event that benefitted the Special Olympics of Kentucky and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass. Many others registered throughout the week and on Saturday morning, likely pushing the number to well over 1,000.

“We wanted to support Special Olympics in a fun way,” said Kelly Baker, who ran with her daughter, “and this was a great way to do it.”

Participants were provided sunglasses and food courtesy of Chick-fil-A of Richmond Centre.
