Airport planning mock disaster drill

RICHMOND — Madison Airport officials and Eastern Kentucky University are making plans for a mock disaster drill tentatively scheduled for August.

According to airport manager Jason Bonham, the drill is still in the early development stages, and several more meetings are required to finalize plans.

Two years ago, the airport took part in a drill which simulated a large airplane crash, complete with actors playing crash victims, and tested the response from local agencies.

“This year we’re probably going to do something with a smaller plane, and also some type of emergency with the fuel farm,” Bonham said.

He said he already has met with the university’s environmental health and safety department to begin planning. The county emergency management agency and local first responders will be included in the drill.

Corradino Group plans for Airport’s future

The Corradino Group, which was chosen as the airport’s new contracted engineering firm, is preparing a report on how funding will be pursued for future projects.

Corradino Group representative Joel Morrill attended the airport board’s monthly meeting Tuesday to update board members, and according to board chair Wilma Walker, the group will present a written plan to the board March 14.

In other business, the board:

• Announced it will host an open house at the airport April 26.

• Walker said the airport layout plan has been sent to the Federal Aviation Administration for review. A response is expected in mid-April, she added.

• Announced a visit by FAA representative James Williams from Texas is planned for the week of March 17.

• Walker said the board will discuss policies and procedures for the airport in its April 1 meeting.
