Vietnam vets, EKU to mark Armed Forces Day on Saturday

RICHMOND — Saturday is Armed Forces Day, and the Madison County Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America will conduct an 11 a.m. memorial service at the Eastern Kentucky University Veterans Memorial.

The memorial is next to the Meditation Chapel between the Powell and Wallace buildings on campus.

The program will last about 30 minutes and will include a “Missing Man Ceremony,” said Emerson McAfee, who heads the local VVA chapter that was organized this past June.

“For those who have never witnessed it, the Missing Man Ceremony is a very solemn event,” McAfee said.

The Madison County Veterans Committee Color Guard will present the national colors and play taps for the ceremony. Kristi Miller, Cashbox Records artist from Berea, will sing “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Amazing Grace.”

The program will be repeated at noon May 22 at the Veterans Administration Clinic in Berea, west of Exit 77 off Interstate 75.

“We invite everyone to come witness one or both of these celebrations and join in honoring our veterans,” McAfee said.

VVA Chapter 1066 welcomes new members, and anyone interested is invited to attend the group’s next meeting at 7 p.m. May 23 at the Blue Grass Army Depot’s golf clubhouse (Bldg. S-2). U.S. military veterans who served anywhere in the world between August 1964 and May 1975 are eligible to join the VVA.
