Richmond police have arrested a man who is suspected of stealing a backpack blower while workers were landscaping property on the Eastern Bypass.
Lonnie R. Hatfield Jr., 28, of Maryland Drive was charged Wednesday with theft by unlawful taking (over $500).
The owner of JP Landscape reported April 5 that a Stihl backpack-style blower, worth $600, had been stolen while workers were at the AT&T store.
The driver of a maroon pickup truck was seen taking the blower from the curb and fleeing the scene, the RPD reported.
A follow-up investigation identified Hatfield as a suspect, and he was interviewed Wednesday at the police station, according to the RPD.
After he was arrested, an officer reported that Hatfield tried to dispose of a plastic bag containing 30 oxycodone pills by hiding it in the interview room.
Officers found the pills, and Hatfield also was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence.
